give because I am expressing gratitude to the universe. I am grateful for so many things in my life. And you know something else? The act of giving is something the ‘super’ rich do as well. It is smart to give. Giving is the one act that unites and defines our humanity. It is the ultimate act of nobility- until the Zombie virus infects the globe piece by piece and we all start shooting each other in the kill spot before we ‘turn’. I am a supporter of charities - as well as the Walking Dead, obviously. If you are new to giving or are not sure how people, animals or the environment benefit from your donation a good idea is to ring, email or become a volunteer. Research places. Think about what places fit in with your own core values or topics of interest. Don’t for instance pick a ‘Save the Sharks’ organisation if you don’t have an opinion about sharks or don’t think Sharks should be swimming near humans. Some people see it the other way around – we shouldn’t be swimming around sharks! Volunteering can give you a sense that you are part of a group that equally shares your interest and thinks a certain way about a particular topic. It can also raise your awareness that the issue is much more complicated and layered than your original perception!
You don’t have to give just money – you can help by being a friend to someone or strengthening an existing friendship or relationship. That is giving. You can choose to support small business and shop in places that don’t get much foot traffic. You can offer your professional services for free or work within that person’s financial limitations. You could give away a prize or give away free tickets to someone. Buy a bunch of flowers and give them to your mother, grandmother or someone you know that will appreciate them. You can befriend an elderly person who needs some company, or offer your help to someone who is struggling in a certain area of their life – maybe you are doing better in that area yourself and can help out. Is a friend moving house? Offer to help them with packing or the actual move. Make the offer. Helping any person who is struggling or needing assistance in some way is ‘GIVING’. If they don’t want your assistance or support in some way find someone else who you can give to. It feels good to give when you can see that you made a positive difference to someone else. Don’t let anyone put you off giving. Giving is positive and it generates positive feelings to both the giver and the receiver.
